Categories

Two awards are available—one for first time authors (novice category) and one for previously published authors (experienced category).

Eligibility

The primary author in both categories must be an ASORN member. Entries may have more than one author if all authors are identified. In the experienced category, the primary author must have been previously published. In the novice category, if submitted by multiple authors, none of the authors may have previously published anywhere.

All entries must be the original work of the author(s) and may not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication. Manuscripts being considered by other publishers will not be accepted.

Subjects must be pertinent to ophthalmology and/or patient care. Topics are not limited to research studies, nursing process, disease topics or clinical studies. All topics affecting ophthalmic health personnel will be considered.

Award

The winner in each category will receive $175 and publication in Insight: The Journal of the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. Prize money will be awarded to the primary author. It will be their responsibility to determine how money is distributed.

Selection Process

Applications will be masked and sent to the Awards Committee for review and selection. Judging of manuscripts will be "blind"—judges will not know who authored the manuscript.

Judging will be based on value to ophthalmic practice, organization of information, knowledge of topic, clarity of writing, presentation, and style.

ASORN retains the right to publish all manuscripts submitted (subject to approval) unless a written release for withdrawal is obtained from the Editor of Insight and the President of ASORN. Winning manuscripts will not be allowed to withdraw from ASORN publication.

Manuscript Submissions

Manuscripts must be typed on white 8½ x 11" paper, double spaced. Top, bottom, left and right margins should be 1½ ". The number of pages of text should not exceed twelve (12). (Do not count the title page, abstract page, reference page, photos, charts, and illustrations.)

A cover letter should accompany the manuscript. It should state that the entry is an original work by the author(s) and that permission is given by the author(s) for ASORN to publish the manuscript in Insight (subject to approval). It should provide the home address, work and home phone number of each author.

The name of author(s) should appear only on the title page and in the cover letter. The title page should contain: the manuscript title, the name, degree/certification, address, title of position and place of employment of each author, and acknowledgment of any financial/grant support.

The second page of the manuscript should be a summary or abstract of the submission, not more than 100 words in length.

In order to maintain the anonymity of the author(s) for judging purposes, do not identify specific institutions in your entry. If identification is necessary to maintain the integrity of the article, the author(s) will be contacted for clarification before publication.

All references should be submitted in the APA (American Psychological Association) style. References are to be cited in a chronological order to correlate with the text. Number the citations at the end of the appropriate sentence in the text, i.e., (#1), (#2). Style guidelines as follows should be used for references:

Journals - Author's (s) surname, initial(s). Year. Full title of article. Name of periodical including volume number, inclusive of page numbers.

Books - Author's (s) surname, initial(s). Year. Full book title. Edition. City. Name of publisher. Inclusive pages cited.

Article or Chapter in a book - Author's (s) surname, initial(s). Year. Title of article. Title of book. Book author's or editor's surname, initial(s). Edition. City, name of publisher. Inclusive pages cited.

Manuscripts should be mailed flat (not folded) and labeled "Manuscript Award" on the outside of the envelope.

Submit one original and four copies of the entire manuscript (be sure to include copies of charts, illustrations, photographs, etc. for each copy submitted) and a copy on CD-ROM or disk.

Photographs should be 5 x 7" black and white glossy. They should be marked on the back side with an arrow pointing to the "top" for orientation. Reference to placement of photos regarding text, caption, and name of manuscript should accompany photo. Author's name must not appear in photos, charts, or illustrations. Ball point pens and magic markers may distort the glossy surface—take care when writing on the back of photos. Package photos, charts, and illustrations in protective cardboard for mailing. Do not use paper clips or tape directly on them.

Charts and illustrations must be accompanied by a full description and appropriate reference to the text. Details must be large enough to withstand size reduction. Captions should be attached to each chart or illustration in such a manner as to avoid being lost or mixed up, but should not be stapled or attached in a way that will mar the original.

The author is responsible for obtaining and providing written permission for the use of any photos, charts, or illustrations previously published or copyrighted. In addition, the consent of persons photographed must be secured. All consents must accompany the manuscript. Authors should retain a complete copy of the manuscript, photos, charts, and illustrations.
