Qualifications, Responsibilities & Expectations For Elected Positions
Board members are required to attend three Board meetings each year. Expectations for these meetings include:
- Submitting agenda items
- Reviewing agenda book prior to the meeting
- Utilizing contacts, resources and other ASORN members to obtain a broader perspective on agenda topics
- Recommending potential strategies for consideration as agenda items are discussed
- Leaving personal and professional agenda items at the door and making decisions based upon ASORN’s best interest
Each Board member is assigned to act as Board Liaison to several committees and/or local chapters. The Board Liaison’s role includes:
- Representing the Board’s position on the committee’s charges
- Assisting committee chairs with completing tasks
- Reporting committee activities to the Board
- Mentoring committee members and chairpersons as future leaders
Other Board responsibilities may include:
- Representing ASORN at other organizations’ meetings
- Contacting ASORN members to facilitate the exchange of information about the membership’s activities and needs
Time commitments for Board members include:
- Attending three Board meetings each year (expenses reimbursed)
- Participating on occasional conference calls
- Spending extra time reading correspondence, completing projects and talking to members
- Attending Annual Meeting (expenses reimbursed)
Note: serving on the ASORN Board requires Board members to be away from work. Prior to running for the Board, it is strongly recommended that candidates discuss the role and responsibilities with their employers and negotiate the time they will be away from work. It is very difficult to meet the responsibilities as an ASORN Board member without the commitment of the candidate’s employer and family.
Personal attributes for Board members include the ability to:
- Listen to others
- Be open to new ideas and change
- Think independently, but be able to reach a consensus for the common good
- Accept responsibility
- Meet deadlines
Personal attributes for specific elected positions include:
- President & President-elect: leadership, organizational and communication skills
- Secretary-Treasurer: leadership, communication skills, attention to detail
- Annual Meeting Director: leadership, experience in planning and executing educational programs, communication skills, diverse content knowledge
- Director: leadership, communication skills
