First Year – Anterior Uveitis

Goals: 

  • This intensive experience in a busy uveitis clinic will take place on 5 half days during a 10 week rotation during the first year.  The resident will develop the history taking and examination skills to care for complex uveitis patients.  The resident will learn to navigate the system of care to allow for consultation with various services and laboratory assessment to properly care for uveitis patients

Patient care

  • Develop skills in history taking pertinent to patient’s with uveitis
  • Develop an appropriate management plan for a patient with anterior uveitis
  • Develop the ability to counsel patient’s with anterior uveitis on their condition and its complications

Medical knowledge

  • Understand the basic medications used to treat uveitis and their side effects (including topical, periocular, oral steroids, topical and oral non-steroidals and cycloplegic agents)
  • Develop a differential diagnosis based on patient history and clinical findings in patients with anterior uveitis
  • Discuss causes of glaucoma in uveitis patients

Practice-based learning and improvement

  • Discuss evidence for treatment in patients with chronic uveitis requiring systemic immunosuppression
  • Discuss evidence for treating cataracts in patients with anterior uveitis

Interpersonal and communication skills

  • Interact with patients in an empathetic fashion
  • Interact/communicate with clinic staff to enhance patient care and create a pleasant environment

Professionalism

  • Observe faculty interactions with referring physicians

Systems-based practice

  • Recognize the importance of regular communication with other physicians involved in the care of uveitis patients (referring physicians, rheumatologists, etc)
  • Develop a plan for a logical and cost-effective work up for a patient with anterior uveitis
