First Year – Glaucoma

Goals:  The goal of the first year glaucoma rotation is to develop the resident’s knowledge and apply advanced care to patients with glaucoma.  The residents will be given a checklist and the resident will “sign off” topics and procedures as they advance through this rotation.

Patient care

  • Demonstrate competence in the estimation of IOP.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of kinetic and static perimetry.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of gonioscopy.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of stereo examination of the optic nerve using 90 diopter lens, past photos, and OCT.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of interpretation of Goldmann and Humphrey visual fields. {Background Reading about Perimetry available from the Imaging and Perimetry Society}

Medical knowledge

Practice-based learning and improvement

  • Participate in daily practice based learning rounds.
  • Present difficult cases at morning rounds.
  • Participate in Journal Club.

Interpersonal and communication skills

  • Present difficult case at morning rounds.
  • Prepare letters for referring physicians under faculty review.

Professionalism

  • Observe the interactions of faculty when patients have severe glaucoma.
  • Prepare letters for referring physicians under faculty review.
  • Faculty feedback on professionalism.
  • Clinic technician feedback on professionalism (360 degree).

Systems-based practice

  • Review the cost considerations for glaucoma with an emphasis on cost and compliance on treatment of glaucoma.

Second Year – Glaucoma

Goals:  The goal of the second year glaucoma rotation is to develop the resident’s knowledge and apply advanced medical and surgical care to patients with glaucoma.  The residents will be given a 55 item competency checklist and the resident will “sign off” topics and procedures as they advance through this rotation.

Patient care

  • Demonstrate continued competence in the performance of gonioscopy.
  • Demonstrate continued competence in the performance of stereo examination of the optic nerve using the 90 diopter lens, past photos, and OCT.
  • Demonstrate continued competence in the performance of interpretation of Goldmann and Humphrey visual fields.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of laser procedures such as: YAG posterior capsulotomy, laser peripheral iridotomy, argon laser trabeculoplasty, and cyclophotocoagulation.
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance and postoperative care for trabeculectomy and seton tubes.
  • Demonstrate competence in the management of a flat chamber.
  • Demonstrate competence in the revision of filtering blebs.
