No doubt about it, starting a residency is very difficult. Almost a whole year has gone by for us, and the recurrent theme seems to be "I wish I had known this sooner" or "I wish someone would have told me that". Thus the impetus for this little guide is to do just that. It is to be a quick stop for information. We intend for it to be concise, practical, and as up to date as possible. References are provided when appropriate. Obviously, it is not at all complete by any stretch of imagination and you will definitely need to consult the abundant reference materials available in our great C.S. O'Brien library. This first edition is also designed to be a foundation on which we hope you will build upon and pass it along to those who come after us.

Welcome to Iowa Eye. As you will soon find out, this is a great department with a profound and far-reaching legacy of ground-breaking research and excellent patient care. You are now a part of that family whose tradition is "dedicated to progress in ophthalmology".
