Iowa Lions Eye Bank

Saving Sight since 1955

General Information

The Iowa Lions Eye Bank collects, processes, tests, and disseminates corneal tissue for transplant to surgeons throughout the state of Iowa. If the tissue is transplantable but not used by Iowa surgeons, the tissue is offered to surgeons in other areas of the United States and several foreign countries. Tissue that is unusable for transplant is utilized by various research programs in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa and by surgeons throughout the state.

The Iowa Lions Eye Bank is a charter member of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) and rigidly follows EBAA medical standards as well as guidelines set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the processing and evaluation of eye tissue.

All corneas that qualify for transplantation are tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and syphilis.
