Disclaimer
Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications herein are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Editor, publisher, or Society, and the Editor, publisher, and Society disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. The Editor, publisher, and Society do not guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication, nor do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service. Views expressed in articles, editorials, book reviews, and letters published represent the opinions of the author(s) and do not reflect the official policies of ASORN unless clearly specified as such.

Conflict of interest
Authors who have received financial support from a manufacturer or been given product free of charge to use in a study should acknowledge this support on a separate sheet.

Copyright transfer
Manuscripts published in Insight become the sole property of the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. All manuscripts must be accompanied by the following written statement, signed by all authors:

“The undersigned author(s) transfers all copyright ownership of the manuscript entitled [title of article] to the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses in the event the work is published. The undersigned author(s) warrants that he or she has participated sufficiently in the work described to justify authorship, that the article is original, that it does not infringe on any copyright or other proprietary right of any third party, that it is not under consideration by another publication, and that it has not been published previously. [typed name(s) and signature(s) of author(s)]”

Review of manuscripts
All manuscripts submitted undergo blind review by Peer Review Committee members. Reviewers will be rating applicability, clarity, value of contribution, accuracy, organization, and timeliness. If the manuscript is accepted for publication, editorial revisions may be made to improve presentation without altering meaning. If the manuscript needs major revision, it will be requested from authors before acceptance. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work. In addition, the author is responsible for obtaining and providing written permission for the use of any materials, photos, charts, and illustrations previously published or copyrighted. The consent of persons photographed must be secured if the person is identifiable. All consents and written permissions must accompany the manuscript.

Original articles, case studies, research articles, clinical technique discussions, and letters to the editor are accepted. Nonnurse authors should send a query letter to the editor before submitting.

Manuscript preparation

One original and three copies of each manuscript must be submitted including four copies of photographs, charts, and illustrations. If using a dot matrix printer, please submit all copies as originals because of inadequate ability to make clear copies from dot matrix printers. Once a manuscript is accepted, the final version may be submitted on diskette along with two copies of the printout. The author accepts responsibility for the submitted diskette exactly matching the printout of the final version of the manuscript. Guidelines for submission of accepted manuscript on diskette will be sent to the author by the editor. Authors should retain a copy of the manuscript, photos, charts, and illustrations.

Papers must be typed double-spaced on 8½ × 11 inch white paper with 1-inch margins on top, bottom, and sides and should not exceed 12 to 15 pages in length. Please proofread carefully for errors in grammar and spelling. It is advisable to have colleagues or mentors read the manuscript before submission (when possible) to avoid errors. All abbreviations and acronyms must be spelled out the first time they are used.

References should be numbered serially in the text and listed on a separate sheet double-spaced at the end of the manuscript in that order. Reference format should conform to that set forth in “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47). Journal abbreviations should conform to the style used in the Cumulated Index Medicus. Each reference should include:

For journals
—authors' names and two initials, title of article, journal name, date, volume number, and inclusive pages (list all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list six and add et al.) If the journal is paged sequentially throughout the volume, the issue number should not be cited; if the journal is not paged sequentially throughout the volume, then both the issue number and the volume number should be cited.

For books
—authors' names, chapter title, editors' names, book title, edition, city, publisher, date, and pages.

Note the following examples:

Journal 1. Servodidio CA, Abramson DH, Mendelsohn ME. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Insight 1994;22(2):12-5.

Book 2. Byrne SF, Green RL. Ultrasound of the eye and orbit. St. Louis: Mosby; 1992. p. 195-6.

Chapter in a book 3. Guyer DR, Yannuzzi LA, Slakter JS, Sorenson JA, Orlock DA. Indocyanine green videoangiography and choroidal neovascularization. In: Lewis H, Ryan SJ, editors. Medical and surgical retina—advances, controversies, and management. St. Louis: Mosby; 1994. p. 20-9.

Format

Title page
Include manuscript title, author(s) name and credentials, professional position, and affiliations. Include correspondence address, work and home phone and fax numbers, and source of grant or financial support where appropriate.

Summary or abstract page
Show manuscript title but omit author(s) name. This should be a concise summary or abstract not to exceed 100 words and should be numbered as page 1. A header stating manuscript title should appear at top of page.

Text
The first page should be numbered page 2 with subsequent pages numbered sequentially. A header stating manuscript title should appear at top of each page followed by page number. [Header Example: Congenital Cataracts, page 10.] Author's name should not appear in header to facilitate blind review.

References
Type double-spaced on a new page, numbered in order of mention in text. A header stating manuscript title should appear at top of page followed by page number. See example above in text section.

Figures
(This includes photographs, illustrations, line drawings, graphs, or diagrams.) Photographs, clearly reproducible diagrams, and graphs should be numbered with an Arabic numeral and labeled as “Figure 1, Figure 2,” etc., corresponding with their sequence of appearance in the manuscript. A statement in the text should direct the reader to the appropriate figure: (Figure 1).

All figure materials must have details large enough to withstand size reduction. Photographs (3 × 4 inches minimum to 5 × 7 inches maximum) may be color prints, black and white glossy prints, or slides. (Black and white glossies reproduce best.) All lettering must be professionally done and should be in proportion to the drawing, graph, or photograph. Do not send original drawings or x-ray films. Consistency in size within the article is strongly preferred. Figures should be marked on the back side with an arrow pointing to the top for orientation. Illustrations are scanned electronically. For best reproduction, screening, shading, and lettering on a dark background should be avoided. Figures may be submitted in electronic format, along with four copies of the proof. All images should be at least 5 in wide. Images should be provided in EPS or TIF format on Zip disk, CD, floppy, Jaz, or 3.5 MO. Macintosh or PC is acceptable. Graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator, not presentation software such as PowerPoint, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics, should be used in the creation of the art. Color images need to be CMYK, at least 300 DPI, with a digital color proof, not a color laser print or color photocopy. Note: This proof will be used at press for color reproduction. Gray scale images should be at least 300 DPI, combinations of gray scale and line art at least 1200 DPI, and line art (black and white or color) at least 1200 DPI. Include hardware and software information, in addition to the file names, with the disk. Special arrangements must be made with the editor for color illustrations.

The author's name must appear somewhere on only one set of the photos, charts, or illustrations for identification. Ballpoint pens and markers may distort the glossy surface; take care when writing on the back of photos. Package photos, charts, and illustrations in protective cardboard for mailing. Do not mar figures with staples, paper clips, or tape directly on the surface. When using figures adapted from another source, the author must obtain written permission from the original publisher.

Figure legends
A legend should be provided for each numbered figure. Legends should be clearly marked with the figure number they correspond with. They should be double-spaced on a separate page. A header stating manuscript title should appear at top of the page.

Tables
Tables should be typed double-spaced on a separate page. Tables should be descriptively titled and numbered with a Roman numeral (Table I, Table II, etc.). They should correspond with their sequence in the manuscript. A header stating manuscript title should appear at the top of the page.

Reprints

Individual reprints of an article may be obtained from the author.
