The quick question for May was answered by 220 ASORN members from 42 different states with the following results:

  1. When do you consider dilating drops used in your office/clinic outdated (provided the dropper tip was not contaminated during use)?

    1. Expiration date on the bottle 47%
    2. 30 days after opening 38%
    3. Other 15%
Among the “Other” responses were
  • use a fresh bottle on each patient/use “minims” for individual use/pledgets
  • discard at the end of each day
  • one week after opening
  • two weeks after opening
  • 60 days after opening
  • 90 days after opening
  • 6 months after opening
  • until the bottle is empty
