Do your cataract surgery patients self-medicate at home to dilate the operative eye before arrival?

Summary

Two hundred fifteen ASORN members responded to this survey.

The majority of respondents (93%) do not have the patient self-medicate at home for dilation or oral sedation.

Of those facilities that do self-medicate (15):

  • only 2 cases were cancelled for a failure of the patient to properly self-medicate.
  • only 2 have the patient self-medicate with oral sedative agents.
  • 11 were ophthalmology-only facilities
  • 8 were hospital ASCs
  • 6 were office-based ASCs
  • 3 were free-standing ASCs
