Awards and Sponsored Lectures

A faculty committee presents awards each year to medical students, resident physicians, and fellow physicians for excellence in teaching and research. Sponsored lectures are also funded through named lectureships.

A.E. Braley Lecturer:
William E. Scott, MD

Dr. Clifford Hendricks established the Alson E. Braley Lecture in 1981 as a tribute to Dr. Braley who, during his tenure as professor and head of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1950 to 1966, played a pivotal role in the education and training of many young physicians.

Wolfe Foundation Lecturer: David Chang, MD

The Wolfe Lectureship is a forum to share clinical and research developments regarding surgery and diseases of the eye.
The Wolfe Foundation established the Wolfe Lecture in 1969.
In 2002, the Wolfe Clinic Foundation established a permanent endowment with the University of Iowa Foundation to support the annual lectureship that has enabled more than 30 distinguished ophthalmologists to participate in the teaching program of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
The Wolfe Foundation is affiliated with the Wolfe Clinics, ophthalmology and otolaryngology centers located throughout Iowa and headquartered in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Hansjoerg E. Kolder Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology:
Benjamin Mason, MD

The Hansjoerg E. Kolder Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology is presented to the graduating medical student who demonstrates excellence in ophthalmology.

P.J. Leinfelder Award Recipients

The P. J. Leinfelder award was inaugurated in 1982 by alumni to pay tribute to Dr. Leinfelder, who served on the staff of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1936 to 1978. A faculty committee presents awards each year to the resident and fellow physicians who have made significant contributions in preparing and delivering seminars.
This year’s recipients were: Julie Falardeau, MD, “Prognostic Value of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in patients with Compressive Optic Neuropathy”; Fiona E. Costello, MD, “Evidence for Axon Loss in the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in Patients with Recovered Optic Neuritis”; and David B. Petersen, MD, “Cataract Extraction Performed Before, Simultaneously, or After Penetrating Keratoplasty in Eyes with Fuchs’ Dystrophy: Graft Survival and Refractive Outcome.”
