Contact Lens Clinic Renovated

The Contact Lens Clinic recently received a facelift. Although the size of the clinic was increased by only 187 square feet, the overall result makes it more convenient for patients and staff, allowing for a significant increase in the number of patients the clinic can see. The clinic currently sees around 5,000 patients per year.

Relocating and refurnishing the dispensing room made it a more efficient and effective work area. The relocation of the dispensing room made it possible to locate four exam lanes next to each other along one corridor. This actually added one exam lane for the service.

Remodeling created a reception area and business office for the Contact Lens Service by sacrificing a small waiting room. The reception area makes it less confusing and more convenient for patients checking in and out of the Contact Lens Clinic. The reception/business office area vastly increased the available file space. This area adjoins the inventory storage room. This room essentially doubled the space available for storage of inventory.

Departmental administrator, Larry McGranahan, comments "With physical space in the Department becoming very tight, it was a challenge to come up with a plan that adequately addressed Contact Lens' needs without a major adverse effect on another service. We did not want to lose the Blue waiting room, but we feel that the resulting enhanced patient flow and service for our patients will be worth the loss. The Department is thankful to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for funding the construction portion of this project."
