Faculty Activities & Achievements

Dr. Sara L. Butterworth was selected as a Council on Optometric Education (COE) consultant. The COE is the accreditation body for optometry and accredits the professional degree programs, residency programs, and optician programs.

Dr. James C. Folk was a 2001 recipient of The American Academy of Ophthalmology's Senior Achievement Award. The Achievement Awards program recognizes individuals for their contributions to the Academy through participation in the Annual Meeting or other areas of service to the Academy.

Dr. S. S. Hayreh was awarded the 2001 Arnall Patz Medal by The Macula Society for his outstanding contributions in retinal vascular and macular diseases. Dr. Hayreh was also named a fellow of The National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). The award of Fellowship of the academy is an honor bestowed as an acknowledgement of his achievements in the profession.

Pam Kutschke, CO has been elected to the office of President-Elect of the American Association of Certified Orthoptists. After her one year term as President-Elect is complete, she will then be the President of the Organization for three years. The American Association of Certified Orthoptists (AACO) is a membership organization with a mission to promote and advance the professional and educational competence of orthoptists.

Drs. Young Kwon and Jeff Nerad were on the ORBIS mission to Trinidad, Spring, 2001.

Dr. Andrew G. Lee was an invited speaker at the 2001 Canadian Ophthalmology Society and during 2000-2001 has presented lectures at the Mayo Clinic, the Wilmer Eye Institute, the Cole Eye Institute, the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, the Chicago Ophthalmology Society, the Omaha Ophthalmology Society, Baylor College of Medicine, Scott and White Clinic, and the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Stephen R. Russell was elected to The Macula Society in 2001. Dr. Russell was on the ORBIS Mission to Urumqi, China, Summer 2001.

Dr. Edwin M. Stone delivered The Doyne Lecture "Molecular Ophthalmology 1990-2010" on July 5, 2000, at The Oxford Ophthalmological Congress in Oxford, England. Robert W. Doyne founded the Congress in 1901. The Oxford Ophthalmological Congress is the second largest ophthalmological meeting in the United Kingdom.

Dr. John Sutphin was on the Haitian American Friendship Foundation's mission to Bohoc, Haiti, Spring 2001.

Dr. Thomas A. Weingeist was elected president-elect of The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), effective January 1, 2001. The AAO president-elect automatically becomes president the year following the appointment. Dr.Weingeist was also given Honorary Life Membership in the Ophthalmic Photographers' Society in 2000.

Dr. Mark Wilkinson was elected in 2001 to The American Optometric Association's Low Vision Rehabilitation Council.
