UI's Weingeist elected President-Elect of American Academy of Ophthalmology

CITY, Iowa --Thomas A. Weingeist, M.D., Ph.D., University of Iowa head
and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, was elected president-elect
of the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO),
effective Jan. 1.
The AAO president-elect automatically becomes president the year following the appointment. This year, Weingeist will assist George W. Blankenship, M.D., current academy president, and other board members in helping the organization chart its strategic direction and meet its goals.
Since 1984, Weingeist has served on the academy's Board of Trustees as senior secretary for clinical education. In addition, he is editor of the organization's EyeNet magazine (1994-present) and was secretary of continuing education (1992-1994). Weingeist also is a past president of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, an organization representing more than 130 academic ophthalmology programs throughout the United States.
Weingeist received his medical degree from the UI in 1972. He completed his residency in 1975 and a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous in 1976, also at the UI.
The Academy is the world's largest association of eye physicians and eye surgeons, with more than 27,000 members. The organization's mission is to achieve accessible, appropriate and affordable eye care for the public by serving the educational and professional needs of its physician members.
