Weingeist Named Iowa’s Eye Health Advocate 2003
The
Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology (IAO) has selected Thomas A. Weingeist, Ph.D.,
M.D., head and professor of the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology
and Visual Sciences, as Eye Health Advocate for 2003.
Each year the academy selects the person in Iowa who has done the most for the profession of ophthalmology. Weingeist received this year’s award for his "tireless efforts to promote the profession," said Thomas Oetting, M.D., immediate past-president and current member of the IAO board and UI associate professor (clinical) of ophthalmology and visual sciences.
Weingeist’s notable activities included supporting efforts to train ophthalmology residents in Iowa and across the country about professional ethics by promoting resident advocacy programs. In his columns as editor of EyeNet magazine, a publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Weingeist addressed important topics such as reminding colleagues that patients and their rights come first.
In addition, as head of ophthalmology with UI Health Care, Weingeist created a center of excellence for ophthalmic education, research and clinical care. He also served as president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which has 26,000 members worldwide, and was the organization’s senior secretary for education for seven years.
