UI Department of Ophthalmology Ranked Highly

The University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences was ranked third for "Best Overall Program" in a yearly
survey that ranks ophthalmology programs nationwide. The rankings, released by Ophthalmology Times in its November 15 issue, were based on a poll of ophthalmology department chairs in the United States.

The Iowa program also was ranked in the top 10 in the survey's three other categories: fifth among best clinical (patient care) programs, sixth among best research programs, and third among best residency (teaching) programs. The UI department includes 27 faculty members who teach, provide patient care and carry out research in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami School of
Medicine were ranked first and second overall, respectively. The survey was sent to 75 departmental leaders, and 46 percent responded.
