Iowa Lions Golf Events To Benefit Vision And Hearing Programs
Link to Registration Forms and Additional Information
Amateur golfers across Iowa will have opportunities this year to play in a series of statewide tournaments sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Iowa to help fund vision and hearing programs.
Finkbine Golf Course on The University of Iowa campus in Iowa City will host golfers on July 21, 2004, on the tour’s last stop. Event co-chairs, Lori Short and Pat Mason, explained that the proceeds help fund programs that provide vision and hearing services.
The tournaments will be played on the state’s finest courses, such as Finkbine, and will be supervised by Iowa Section PGA professionals and managed by Lou King & Associates. Attendees will include Iowa celebrities and the golfers will play under a “scramble” format, which allows players of all skill levels to participate.
A substantial portion of the tournament entry fee will be tax deductible, since proceeds fund programs supported by the Iowa Lions Foundation, such as Coming To Your Senses, which provides early screening of vision for preschool children, and the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, which helps restore sight to Iowa’s blind and visually impaired through corneal transplantation. Both of these programs are supported by partnerships between the Lions Clubs of Iowa and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
“Vision loss affects a significant portion of our population,” said William Scott, M.D., UI Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and the Ophthalmology Medical Director of Coming To Your Senses. “Early detection and treatment can prevent permanent and debilitating loss of sight. Currently children are not routinely screened until they enter school. For many, this is too late.”
Nearly 13,000 Lions and Lioness of Iowa representing nearly 400 clubs in the state support sight and hearing programs in their own communities through the Iowa Lions Foundation.
