Iowa Lions Eye Bank Receives Iowa Medical Society’s Washington Freeman Peck Award
Award recognizes an organization for outstanding contributions to the public health.
Iowa City, Iowa — April 16, 2007 — Iowa Medical Society (IMS) announced today the winner of the 2007 Iowa Medical Society’s Washington Freeman Peck Award. This award is given each year to honor an organization for outstanding contributions to the public health. The IMS Executive Committee nominated the Iowa Lions Eye Bank for their work as a nonprofit service organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of sight through the recovery, processing and distribution of human ocular tissue for transplantation, research and education.
The award will be presented at the Iowa Medical Society’s Annual Meeting on April 21st. “Thanks to the generosity of donors, more than 11,000 Iowans have had their sight restored, and 12, 000 eyes have been provided to the University of Iowa researchers to discover causes and cures for blinding eye disease,” said Cindy Reed, R.N., Ph.D., Executive Director of the Eye Bank. “Our goal is always to inform and encourage future eye donors who may also choose to give the gift of sight, and whose selflessness will mean a brighter future for many Iowans.”
The Iowa Lions Eye Bank is proud to accept this award for all eye donors, recipients and others who have supported the work of donation. “We are proud to provide the gift of sight and the gift of answers through research to individuals living in Iowa, nationwide and throughout the world,” said Reed.
Supported by a partnership with the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Supported by Lions Clubs throughout state of Iowa, the Iowa Lions Eye Bank is dedicated to restoring sight. Visit Iowa Lions Eye Bank online at www.ialeb.org.
