Cecil Starling O'Brien, M.D. (1889-1977), was recruited to the University of Iowa in 1925 and officially founded the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa in 1927. The Department was the first independent Department of ophthalmology west of the Mississippi River. Dr. O'Brien is credited with the establishment of a strong department that has made many important contributions to ophthalmology. His wife, Lillian C. O’Brien (1904-2006) was a long-time supporter of the Department. The C. S. O'Brien Library within the Department was established in 1973, in tribute to Dr. O'Brien's immense contributions in making the ophthalmology department at the UI a premier clinical, teaching, and research center.
