Gerrit R. J. Melles, MD, PhD to Deliver 27th Braley Lecture

Dr. Gerrit MellesGerrit R. J. Melles, MD, PhD of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, will deliver the 27th Braley Lecture at the Ophthalmology Clinical Conference on September 14th.

He will deliver two lectures while in Iowa City:

  1. Preliminary Results of Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) & Causes of Failure in Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) and DMEK
  2. Anterior & Posterior Lamellar Keratoplasty: Review & Future Perspectives

Dr. Melles is noted for his innovative surgical techniques; one of the most notable of these is a method of corneal transplantation called deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (the Melles technique). He also introduced the use of a tryptan blue staining to facilitate cataract surgical procedures and vitreo-retinal surgical procedures.

Dr. Melles attended medical school and interned at the University of Leyden. He did his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Nijmegen where he also earned his PhD . He did a Phaco-fellowship and the Loenen-Martinet corneal fellowship at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital where he served later as a staff member of the Cornea Service. He also completed a Research fellowship at the Sharp Cabrillo Hospital in San Diego, California.

He is the Director of the Netherlands Institute of Innovative Ocular Surgery and of the Amnitrans EyeBank Rotterdam. He founded the Melles Cornea Clinic in Rotterdam in 2004.
