Investiture to be held October 17

Randy H. Kardon, MD, PhD, has been appointed as the first recipient of the Pomerantz Family Chair in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Kardon is a professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Iowa and Director of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service. He began his association with the University of Iowa as an undergraduate student in 1972 and, in 1975, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a B.S. with Honors and High Distinction. He attended medical school at the University of Iowa in the first combined M.D./Ph.D degree program graduating class in 1982. He did his internship at Medical Clinic and Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, Wisconsin, his ophthalmology residency and 2-year Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship at The University of Iowa, studying under Drs. H. Stanley Thompson and James Corbett.

Investiture Ceremony to be held October 17

An investiture event on Wednesday, October 17, at 4 p.m. in the Prem Sahai Auditorium of MERF. This investiture will recognize Marvin Pomerantz's extraordinary gift to fund three endowed positions and to celebrate the appointments of Dr. Randy Kardon to the Pomerantz Family Chair in Ophthalmology; Dr. Theresa Brennan to the John W. Colloton Professorship in Clinical Cardiology; and Dr. Betsy Chrischilles to the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in Public Health.

Department executive officers, current endowed chair holders, faculty from the featured departments/areas and senior collegiate leaders in the Carver College of Medicine and the College of Public Health will participate in a special academic-gown procession.  The ceremonial procession will set the tone for a meaningful and distinguished program.

The ceremony will include remarks from UI President Sally Mason; UI Foundation President Lynette Marshall; the recipients, Drs. Kardon, Brennan, and Chrischilles; and Marvin Pomerantz. In addition, there will be a presentation of medallions.  A reception will follow in the MERF atrium.
