Wilkinson to become member of NEI's NEHEP planning committee
Mark Wilkinson, OD., Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa, has accepted an invitation to become a member of the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) Planning Committee. This Committee advises the National Eye Institute (NEI) staff on the overall development, implementation, and evaluation of the NEHEP. The appointment to the NEHEP Planning Committee is for 4 years.
The NEHEP was established in response to a Congressional directive to NEI to "increase its commitment to the prevention of blindness through public education programs." The NEHEP is coordinated by NEI, with a goal to educate Americans about the importance of early detection of eye disease and the appropriate treatment for low vision. Program activities are conducted in cooperation with the NEHEP Partnership that represents over 60 public and private organizations. The Planning Committee consists of 10 to 15 individuals who are experts in their field and represent a variety of disciplines including the eye care professions and health education/ communication. Andrew G. Lee, MD, UI Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurosurgery is currently a member of this Committee.
