Costello Honored as one of "Canada's Top 40 under 40™"

Fiona CostelloFormer Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellow ('02), Fiona Costello, MD was recognized On May 5, 2009 as one of Canada's Top 40 under 40.

She is a clinician scientist and co-director of the NeuroProtection and Repair Evaluation Unit (NPREU) with the Arresting Multiple Sclerosis (MS) program at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the Faculty of Medicine and an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Calgary.

Her research and clinical expertise are in the areas of neuro-ophthalmology and multiple sclerosis. Together with her collaborators, she has been awarded $2.5 million research grant funding to implement a novel experimental model of MS she has developed in ongoing studies.

“I use the visual system as a means of finding new ways to look at old problems. The eye can give us many insights into mechanisms of brain injury, and help us better understand diseases like multiple sclerosis,” she says.

The Canada's Top 40 Under 40 award, co-sponsored by Caldwell Partners International, is given to individuals who have shown vision and leadership; innovation and achievement; impact; community involvement and contribution; and growth development strategy. Out of approximately 1200 nominees, Dr. Costello was one of six physician scientists awarded this honour as chosen by an independent advisory board.

Dr. Costello remarked, "I am forever grateful for the mentorship, training and guidance I received at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences from Dr. Randy Kardon, Dr, Sohan Singh Hayreh, Dr. Michael Wall, Dr. Stan Thompson, and Dr. Andrew Lee (who has recently left Iowa to take a Chair position with the Department of Ophthalmology at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas). "

About Canada's Top 40 Under 40™

The Advisory Board of Canada's Top 40 Under 40 met in February this year to select the 2008 recipients. The honourees were celebrated at an award gala on May 5, 2009 and featured in The Globe and Mail on Friday, May 1, 2009. Established in 1995, Canada's Top 40 Under 40 celebrates the achievements of Canadians in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors who were under the age of 40 by Dec. 31, 2008. The 26 members of an independent advisory board choose the honorees from about 1,200 nominees through a selection process based on five criteria: vision and leadership; innovation and achievement; impact; growth and development strategy; and community involvement and contribution.
