Books Published by Ophthalmology Faculty

Drs. Daniel H. Gold and Thomas A. Weingeist have edited Color Atlas of the Eye in Systemic Disease published by Lippincott-Williams & Wilkins in December of 2000. This new text combines features of a color atlas with a quick reference, tabular format. The Text/Atlas includes most of the major and more common systemic disorders with significant ocular manifestations, as well as other less common but interesting ocular-systemic diseases. The authors hope that the atlas will be of value in stimulating the reader to think more broadly about the relationship of the eye and the body.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Nerad's new book, Oculoplastic Surgery: the Requisites in Ophthalmology was published in June 2001 by Mosby-Yearbook. The book is a comprehensive introductory text for physicians who want to treat patients with common oculoplastic, lacrimal, and orbital problems. It is a practical approach to common problems. Unlike most surgical texts, the text is written in the first person and takes a conversational tone. In the preface, Dr.Nerad advises "Consider this book a `written preceptorship,' telling you what is important to know about a problem, the practical `how-to' information, conveyed as though we were in the office or operating room".

The American Academy of Ophthalmology reprinted Dr.Wallace L.M. Alward's book, Color Atlas of Gonioscopy in 2000. Dr. Alward states in the preface to the first edition " I was inspired to write this book when I discovered a remarkable collection of watercolor paintings of the angle created by Lee Allen in the late 1940s and early 1950s." Dr.Alward used Mr.Allen's paintings to illustrate points whenever possible and used photographs only when no paintings were available. The paintings were able to incorporate both panorama and detail which is something photographs do not do as well.
