Goals
- The goal of the contact lens clinic is to enhance the resident’s knowledge of optics and develop an understanding of basic contact lens design and materials.
Patient care
- Retinoscopy/refraction refinement.
- History/exam: understand what additional tests and questions are needed during a CL exam.
- Basic CL fitting.
- Selection of CL candidates.
- How to use auxiliary CL instruments.
- Techniques to verify and inspect contact lenses.
- CL insertion and removal techniques.
Medical knowledge
- Develop an understanding of ophthalmic optics including: optics of the SCL and RGP; BVP vs. FVP, BC changes, lacrimal lens, optic zone, how to convert a glasses Rx to a CL Rx, how to convert from plus to minus cylinder.
- Basic CL design including terminology.
- Develop an understanding of when contact lenses may be useful.
Practice-based learning and improvement
- Present difficult case at morning rounds.
Interpersonal and communication skills
- Present difficult case at morning rounds.
- Present optical correction options to patient.
Professionalism

Third Year – Contact Lens
Goals
- The goal of the contact lens clinic is to enhance the resident’s knowledge/application of optics, refine optical techniques, develop an understanding of basic contact lens design and materials, access contact lens induced complications, and develop an appreciation for the complexity of advanced fitting techniques.
Patient care
- Manage CL fitting for complex conditions, eg., PK’s, KCN, and children.
- Review use of ophthalmic instruments for CL fitting.
- Manage common CL complications.
- Understand contact lens selection for various conditions.
- Demonstrate the use of corneal topography to fit contact lenses.
Medical knowledge
- Understand the differences between material choices.
- Understand how to modify a contact lens to improve comfort, vision, or physiological response.
- Understand how to manage CL induced complications.
- Understand various methods to measure corneal topography for CL prescription.
Practice-based learning and improvement
- Present difficult case at morning rounds.
- Define, on an individual basis, how CL’s will be used in the future practice of the resident.
Interpersonal and communication skills
- Present difficult case at morning rounds.
- Present optical correction options to patient.
Professionalism
- Develop relationship with optometrist and optician.
Systems-based practice
- Review cost and logistic considerations with contact lens
