Eye Donation

There are several ways that you can let your friends, family and healthcare providers know that you wish to be a donor. Talk to your family and friends, Register Online with the Iowa Donor Registry, mark "yes" on your drivers license, and fill out and carry a donor card.

Tell your family

In Iowa, your family or appointed durable power of attorney for healthcare can make the final decision regarding donation. To ensure that your wishes are carried out at the time of your death, please talk to your family before hand so that your wishes are clearly defined.

Register Online

The Iowa Donor Registry is available to residents of Iowa. Register online to give the gift of sight. Donor Hotline: 1-877-Donor-IA (1-877-366-6742. In July of 2002, First Person Consent legislation was passed allowing individuals to record their decision to be a donor and verify that this decision will be honored at the time of death. The Iowa Donor Registry allows individuals to register their consent to making an anatomical gift.

Drivers License

When you renew your drivers license, tell them you want your license to reflect your wishes about donation. This will help guide your family or healthcare providers toward the next step regarding donation at the time of your death. The “yes” on your driver’s license is a legal consent for organ donation (transplant only). In the state of iowa, marking your license does not give consent for tissue and eye donation, nor does it give consent for research. To make sure all of your donation wishes will be carried out, you must register with the Iowa Donor Registry.

Donor Card

If you choose to become a donor, this uniform card should be carried with you at all times. When you sign your card, make sure you discuss it fully with your witness so that they understand that you do want to become a donor at the time of your death.
