This technique flattens the learning curve for DMEK and early cases have shown significant success.

The fundamentals of the technique are:

  1. Iowa Lion's Eye Bank prepared pre-stripped DMEK tissue
  2. Modified Jones Tube Glass Injector*
  3. Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) gas for extended graft tamponade

*The modified Jones tube for DMEK was designed by Michael Straiko, MD (Devers Eye Institute), Matthew Ward, MD (University of Iowa), Mark Greiner, MD (University of Iowa), Anna Kitzmann, MD (University of Iowa), Kenneth Goins, MD (University of Iowa) and Scott Wheeler (Gunther-Weiss). It is available at Gunther-Weiss Scientific Glass Blowing Co., Inc.: http://guntherweiss.com/demk/
