Diagnosis: keratitis- an autoimmune response

Image Comments:
The patient is a 13 year-old country girl in Bihar, India. Previously, it was assumed that the diagnosis would be keratitis scrofulosa ( eccematosa ) - a reaction to tuberculosis elsewhere in the patient's body. Now it is considered to be an autoimmune reaction - not just to tuberculosis but to other antigens. There usually is a rapid response to a combination of a steroid and antibiotic eye medication - drops or ointment.
