Patricia G. Duffel, RPh, MA Trish has a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Texas, Austin (1976) and an M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of Iowa. She is a registered pharmacist and has practiced community pharmacy in Austin, Texas, and in Iowa City, Iowa. In the 1980s she worked as a staff pharmacist and manager of the indexing section of the Iowa Drug Information Service (IDIS), a drug information storage and retrieval system. The job taught her a lot about drugs and pharmacy, about managing professionals, and about how information can be organized (i.e. how one group of people puts information into a system so that another can retrieve and use it). It was a natural progression from IDIS into library and information science, so she went to graduate school and, in 1991, earned a Master's degree in library & information science. Since graduation she has been the solo librarian for the Univeristy of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. There, she is literature searcher, information chaser, library manager, newsletter writer/editor, copy editor, webmaster, and educator. If it has to do with information search, gathering, retrieval, organization, or presentation, she probably does it.
