Look What's Cookin'
Connie Hinz gathered a group to make dinner for the people staying at the Ronald McDonald House on Martin Luther King Day as a community service. Participating in the event were Michele Prottsman, Connie Hinz, Liz Bulgarelli, Kim Johnson, Karen Hoffman, and Barb Taylor. Liz Bulgarelli said, “We had a BLAST!!!!! We hope to continue doing this on a regular basis. Many thanks to Connie for being the thoughtful, caring person that she is!”

Beat The Winter Blahs
Article by Dr. Boldt
The weather is cold and gray. It’s the middle of a long Iowa winter. What in the world are you going to do for fun on the weekend?
Why, you could have a ball at the
Third Annual Ophthalmology Department Miniature Golf Tournament
By a plurality vote, this year’s tournament will be Saturday morning February 23rd at 10:30 a.m.
At that time, your workplace will be used for something that UIHC never intended it to be. Whack a ball the length of the Department! Negotiate the twists and turns of the Administration office! For those of you who have participated in prior tournaments, you know all the fun you can have. For those who have never played, this is your chance!
No golfing experience is necessary!
Age-appropriate from 4 to 104.
Prizes will be awarded for:
- Low individual score
- High Individual Score
- Low Team Score
- Best Dressed Golfer
- And, the most coveted award, the Best Designed Golf Hole.
See if you can navigate Dr. Wilkinson’s newest hole with devices to simulate vision impairment!
Test your skills on Dr. Russell’s golf simulator!
See what Gail Jons can design with a mere 10,000 billing sheets!
While Susannah Longmuir has run away with the Best Dressed Golfer for the first 2 years, this category is now wide open, as she tells me she has no maternity golf wear.
Refreshments will be provided.
Please bring a putter if you have one, but we will have some extras available.
We’ll start at 10:30 and should be done by 12:30.
Please RSVP to me (Dr. Boldt) by Friday, February 15th, so we make arrangements for refreshments. Let me know how many adults and kids will be coming with you.
We hope to see you there!

News from the Iowa Lions Eye Bank
Article by Deb Schuett, Education Coordinator and Program Assistant
If you frequented any movies over the Holiday Season (beginning mid-November) at the Coral Ridge 10 Theaters in Coralville and/or the Crossroads 12 Theaters in Waterloo and arrived early enough to view the on-screen ads, you may have noticed the Iowa Lions Eye Bank on the Big Screen!
Deb Schuett, Program Assistant for the Eye Bank, applied for and received a grant from the Iowa Department of Public
Health/Category II Public Awareness Grant in August of 2007 to promote donor awareness and donor designation in Iowa. Grant funding of $2,500 and matching funds put forth by the Eye Bank, allowed for the development of a series of 7.5 second on-screen ads to run prior to movie previews for all movies over a 9 month period (ending in August of 2008) in both theater locations.
Working with IT Access graphic artists and the Marcus Theaters Regional Manager, Deb developed 4 different and unique ads aimed at public awareness for donor designation (via Iowa’s on-line donor registry, www.IowaDonorRegistry.org) and focusing on cornea recipients as well as donor families. So, let’s all go to the movies---and go early!
Winter Party February 15th: Let’s Dance!
Article by Larry McGranahan
Save the evening of Friday, February 15th for the Ophthalmology Winter Party in the beautiful Main Lounge at the Iowa Memorial Union. The Main Lounge is the original ballroom in the IMU.
The evening will begin with a social “hour” from 5:30 – 7:00. We will have a variety of hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will be available for alcoholic beverages throughout the evening. Soft drinks will be provided by the Department. The dinner buffet will begin at 7:00. There will be a choice of entrees, including vegetarian options.
In response to your suggestions following last year’s party, the theme for this year’s entertainment is DANCE. If you enjoy dancing, or just like to watch others, there will be something for you.
The entertainment portion of the evening will begin with a performance/demonstration by members of the award-winning UI Swing Dance Club. Then, the “professional” dancers will offer group instruction to any of our staff members who want to learn some of the steps they have just seen. This will be your chance to learn the dips, the twirls, and just “Get Your Swing On”! The dancers specialize in East Coast Swing, the Lindy Hop, and Charleston. After the lesson portion is over around 9 or 9:30, the dance floor will be opened up for general dancing for the remainder of the evening – until approximately 11:00 PM.
Music and special effects lighting will be provided by Hot Flashes Sound and Light Show.
It promises to be a fun evening.
Please note that you will need to RSVP to Sherry Brown or Marlys Bartling by Friday, February 8 if you and an adult guest plan to attend for the meal. Our payment to the IMU depends upon how many people attend for the meal, so please don’t respond “yes” if you don’t plan to be there for the buffet dinner.
Birth Announcement
The newest Greenlee, Anna Elise, made her appearance on January 7 (7 lb. 2 oz). Anna’s mom, glaucoma faculty member, Dr. Emily Greenlee, says that big siblings Jake and Alaina really enjoy her.
Duties Redistributed During Vicky Pollock Extended Absence
Vicky Pollock will be on extended leave starting January 25th. She expects to be back in the office on March 10th. Marlys Bartling will be covering Vicky’s desk during this time, time analysis forms should be given to Marlys. Sue Rath will take care of any online on-call changes after January 25. Kathy Burkle will handle any dietary or repair or lab coat requisitions. Pat Smith will handle any name-badge needs. Messages you’d normally e-mail to Vicky should be phoned in to Marlys (6-2866), Sherry (6-2867) or Kathy (3-8681).
“Best Eye Can Be”
Pat Koffron broke her wrist last week. It is now ensconced in a beautiful purple cast, but Pat will be away from the nurses’ station for awhile. Besides her important work in the Nurses' Station, Pat was the Ophthalmology Team Captain for Lighten Up Iowa. Shelley Brannian has taken over from Pat as Captain of the Department’s Lighten Up Iowa Team, “Best eye can be.” It’s not too late to join. See Shelley if you are interested in joining the team. For more information about Lighten Up Iowa, see http://www.lightenupiowa.org.
Ophthalmology Reporters & Informants: Keep Up the Good Work!
I want to thank the people who took it to heart when I asked for stories for the Update. As a result of the call last week, we had so much news I decided not to wait another week for the Update, but to do it today instead.
I depend on everyone in the Department to tell me what is going on because I spend the vast majority of my time down in the library chained to a computer. Please do not assume that I know about something. Remember, I'd rather hear about it two or three times than miss reporting an event. Come by the library (01137 PFP), call me at 6-2191, or drop me an email at ![]()
