House Staff News

New Fellows, 2000


The following fellows started their fellowship July 2000 and completed it June 2001, since the Iowa Eye News was last published.

Cornea and External Diseases

Roger M. Kaldawy, MD, is from Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his medical degree at St. Joseph University School of Medicine in Beirut. He then came to the U.S. and completed an internal medicine internship at Staten Island University, New York City, and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York. Dr. Kaldawy completed his fellowship in 2001. He is now an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science in the Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery Service at Boston University Medical Center.

Glaucoma

Christina A. M. Bruno, MD, received her BS from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania, and an MD from Penn State. She completed an internship at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Institute. Dr. Bruno completed her glaucoma fellowship in June 2001. Her professional plans are not yet finalized.

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Deborah S. Lenahan, MD, completed undergraduate and medical school degrees at the University of Alabama. She served an internal medicine residency at Jacksonville (Florida) University Hospital and then returned to the University of Alabama for an ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship. She was in private practice in Lexington, North Carolina, until coming to Iowa. After completing her fellowship in June 2001, Dr. Lenahan joined a private practice at the Western Rockies Eye Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Swaminathan ("Meena") Meenakshi, MD, received her MBBS from the University of Madras Medical College and an MS in ophthalmology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Madras. She practiced privately for one year in India. Dr. Meenakshi completed a corneal research fellowship at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, an internship at Kettering Medical Center, and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Louisville. She completed her fellowship in June 2001 and has taken up an academic position at Sankara Nethralaya, an eye hospital in Madras, India.

Neuro-Ophthalmology

Fiona E. Costello, MD, is from St.John's, Newfoundland, Canada. She received her MD from Memorial University of Newfoundland and also completed her residencies in neurology and ophthalmology there.

Neuro-Ophthalmology Research

Oliver Bergamin MD, began a research fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology in November2000. Dr.Bergamin received his MD at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He completed his research residency at University Eye Clinic of Basel, and his clinical residency at University Eye Hospital of Bern, Switzerland, and at Eye Hospital of Aarau, Switzerland. Before beginning his fellowship at Iowa he did a research fellowship in eye movements at Department of Neurology at University Hospital of Zurich.

Neuro-Ophthalmology & Glaucoma Research

Mary Lucy Pereira, MD, received her MD from Universidade Gama Filho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Oculoplastic Surgery

 
Junhee Lee, MD, received his MD from Yale and then completed his general medicine internship at Graduate Hospital of Philadelphia and an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital.

Vitreoretinal Disease and Retina Surgery

 

Sharam Danesh, MD, is a native of Iran. He moved alone to Los Angeles at age 16, and eventually moved to British Columbia and became a Canadian citizen. He received BS and MD degrees from the University of British Columbia, and completed an internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Ottawa.

Calvin Grant, MD, is a native of Washington, D.C. He completed his MD at the University of Pennsylvania, an internal medicine residency at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard, and his ophthalmology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
