Iowa Highlights from the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting in Orlando

Dr. Thomas A. Weingeist, "The Road to Recertification", Opening Session

In the opening session, Dr. Tom Weingeist was honored for his year of service as President of the Academy in 2002.

Dr. Sohan Hayreh was a Guest of Honor at the meeting. The Academy expressed its admiration and gratitude for Dr. Hayreh's years of dedication and leadership in the field of ophthalmology. The special award recognized Dr. Hayreh's dedication to research and education that has made him an outstanding role model in the field of ophthalmology.

The Presentation of the Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Hayreh

Dr. Culver Boldt	Dr. Culver Boldt received an Achievement Award. Achievement Awards recognize individuals for their time and contribution to the scientific programs of the Annual Meeting.
		Dr. Tom Oetting	Dr. Andrew Lee
Dr. Andrew Lee received a Secretariat Award in Instruction and Continuing Education and Dr. Tom Oetting received a Secretariat Award for Communications. The Secretariat Award is new in 2002 and recognizes ophthalmologists for special contributions to the Academy and to ophthalmology.

Dr Stan Thompson was honored by the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society when he was invited to give the 2002 William F. Hoyt Lecture (picture to right). Dr Thompson talked about the History of Using Pupillary Reactivity as an Indicator of Visual Potential.

	Dr. John Sutphin (at left) gave a Key Note Lecture to the Refractive Surgery Interest Group prior to the AAO on Friday, entitled "What are We Doing to the Cornea." He was also principal instructor for the course: Highlights of the Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) Number 8, Cornea and External Disease and was Chairman of BCSC 8 with a new edition published this year.

The Annual Iowa Eye Association reception held Monday night at the Peabody, was a big success with about 100 people attending. (see the photo album)
