Preretinal Hemorrhage

Preretinal hemorrhages are located just anterior to the retina or under the internal limiting membrane.  Boat-shaped hemorrhages with a fluid level are characteristic.  If hemorrhages are round or linear, they were required to obscure a portion of a retinal vessel. 

Severity

None: not present

Mild:  less than 1/2 disc area (standard photograph 1)

Preretinal hemorrhage, mild

Moderate: more than 1/2 disc area, but less than 2 disc areas (standard photograph 2)

Preretinal hemorrhage, moderate
