Planned Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)

Contributor: H. Kolder, MD, PhD; Thomas A. Oetting, MS, MD

Here is a planned extracapsular surgery performed by Dr. Hanjoerg Kolder. He makes a limbal incision of about 12 mm and then expresses the lens with counter pressure with a muscle hook. He closes with a running 10-O nylon suture but I tend to close with interrupted 10-O nylon sutures. In this case he places a SK21 PMMA IOL. I tend to use the acrylic MA 50 (unfolded) when I do ECCE as I already have it available in the OR and it is a big IOL at 6.5 mm optic.
