Microphthalmos

An aphorism emphasized at the Kurji Holy Family Hospital Eye Clinic where so many totally blind patients were seen daily: " Two eyes are a luxury, one eye is a necessity!! " The patient in this photo was most fortunate: his left eye was blind from microphthalmos, but his right eye was perfect. In addition, the facial pock marks showed that he had survived his battle with smallpox.

The eye is generally smaller in size. The cornea falls into microcornea - its diameter is less than 11 mm. The pyriform shape of the cornea suggests a coloboma of the iris, but a definite iris defect at 6:00 o'clock cannot be detected in the photo.
