World Orthoptic Day Celebration

Submitted by Wanda Pfeifer, MME, OC(C), COMT, CO-

On Monday, June 3, our Orthoptics team hosted a World Orthoptic Day Celebration, including an “amblyopia obstacle course”. It was a great opportunity to showcase some of the services that orthoptists can offer.

There were over 50 participants from the department that joined and were able to experience and learn about amblyopia.

The amblyopia course consisted of five stations:

Station 1: Participants were greeted by Amanda and given a pair of glasses that simulated amblyopia

Station 2: Causes of amblyopia and possible treatments were discussed. Everyone was then patched and sent back to Kindergarten (Station 3)

Station 3 and 4: Shayna was our teacher assisting participants in completing a counting work sheet and a writing worksheet. On the writing worksheet participants could write their name for a chance to win a pediatric prize basket that the students and I put together.

Station 5: Logan helped participants with a depth perception challenge of trying to get a ball in a cup. This was a huge hit. Those who were successful were said to have their amblyopia cured. In typical Iowa fashion we had a VERY successful cure rate (>95%).

Cookies: At the end participants were offered cookies provided by the orthoptics team!

Pronk featured in Popular Science

Submitted by Denise Rettig-

The quest to craft the perfect artificial eye, through the ages

Excerpt from the article-

According to Pronk, most implants are now fully integrated using porous acrylic. “They still attach the four muscles to the ball of that implant,” she explains, “and then sew the tissue over it. All that tissue then grows into the implant, making it fully integrated.” About six weeks following orbital implant surgery, Pronk steps in. With the same material used by dentists, she makes a mold of the eye to create a bespoke prosthetic. In the US, Pronk claims that all artificial eyes are made of PMMA and have been for some time. “I don’t believe there’s anyone in the US that does glassblowing.”

Besides hand painting the iris to match the working eye, which takes about six hours, Pronk spends time adjusting the curvature of the prosthetic to ensure that it is similar. Comfort is key, as well as “making sure we get as much movement out of it as we can.”

Regarding the patient-
(Edited for clarity)

"She had nothing but the highest praise for all the staff they encountered today."

"Their first appointment was at 8:30 am and they checked out at 1 pm. The patient's daughter said that she has been involved with many, many medical appointments with her mom and family and she had nothing but the most wonderful experiences with all staff she encountered today.
