Ghost Vessels from Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Interstitial Keratitis

Contributor: William Flanary, MD

Photographer: Brice Critser, CRA

This is a 29-year-old female with a history of herpes simplex keratitis diagnosed at age 5. She has had multiple recurrences of stromal keratitis throughout her childhood. Her exam revealed a stromal scar in the left eye with regressed blood vessels ("ghost vessels"). This represents evidence of prior herpetic disease.
