Granuloma pyogenicum

A chalazion has ruptured through the tarsal conjunctiva not far from the lid margin.There is growth of granulation tissue which has produced a mass called a granuloma pyogenicum.

Granuloma pyogenicum

A chalazion has ruptured through the tarsal conjunctiva. With the growth of granulation tissue a very large lesion may develop - as in the photo. Even though the lesion consists of granulation tissue, it carries the misnomer " granuloma pyogenicum ".

Granulation tissue is exuding from the incision site of previous chalazion surgery. Curettage should be repeated and the tissue sent to the pathologist to rule out a malignancy.
